borderline personality disorder
BPD is a condition dealing with difficulties in emotional regulation and intensity. The result is often impulsive behavior, low self esteem, and intense responses to triggering events that could potentially lead to self harm. The statistics indicate that 3/4 of people suffering from BPD are women, but recently it has been shown that men may equally struggle, yet are misdiagnosed with depression. Within the past year, I have been reading and learning that BPD is often misdiagnosed or those suffering from this illness are written off by therapists as too difficult to treat. I am strongly against this point, and will stand to raise awareness on this mental health condition. Recently, I have discovered a form of treatment known as dialectical behavioral therapy, which is a form of psychotherapy in which someone struggling can learn how to cope with their emotion dysregulation. I will link my sources, and provide information regarding the misdiagnosis. I hope to host a zoom session with a mental health professional who can tell us more about BPD, the symptoms, and how to communicate with those suffering, while validating their emotions.
